Chris Roemer: Forget tolerance. Cancel culture requires acceptance.

Former President Barack Obama warns Democrats to be careful not to be “buzz kills”. It’s a bit late for that, don’t you think?

The damage the awakened mob has done to this country over the past decade is incalculable. It goes far beyond sucking the lives of parents over Thanksgiving dinner.

In fact, if you’re in the right frame of mind, tweaking wokesters on Thanksgiving can be quite fun. Wokesters are particularly easy to handle, but if you’re not careful, they’ll storm out of the house in a rage before dessert, swearing never to return.

But the drama they cause at family gatherings is nothing compared to the carnage they have sown in people’s lives, destroying both careers and reputations.

Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville put it this way. “Some of these people have to go to a ‘woke’ rehab or something. They express language that people just don’t use, and there’s a backlash and frustration to that.

Obama was a little less harsh, but basically said the same thing. Recently, in a ‘Pod Save America’ interview, the former president said, “You know, sometimes people just don’t want to feel like they’re walking on eggshells. And they want us to recognize that life is messy and we can all, at any time, say things the wrong way, make mistakes.

Although he’s right, I think the former president is playing it down a bit. Living in a waking world is more like walking through a minefield than walking on eggshells.

For years I have heard calls for “brave conversations,” said that only through these conversations can we bridge what separates us as Americans. We need to dialogue. We must dialogue with those with whom we disagree. We must learn to see things from other people’s point of view, but things can get very bad, very quickly when you venture into the awakened minefield.

Chances are that sooner or later you will step on one of these mines and it will explode in your face. Break with progressive orthodoxy and you will find yourself subject to avoidance, ridicule, punishment or worse.

Cancel culture seeks to shut down debate, not encourage it, and it seeks to punish those who refuse to acquiesce to the liberal orthodoxy of the day. “Courageous conversations” too often turn out to be nothing more than a way to shame conservatives into admitting they are wrong.

The end result is that a lot of people decide the best thing to do is shut up. Stay out of the minefield. Don’t engage, because engaging means risking saying something that will cause you to lose your job, or your position in the community, or be ostracized on campus.

Times are changing, however. More and more Americans are fed up. They’re tired of the bullying, and they push back, and progressives, after years of doing whatever they want, are struggling to adjust to this new reality.

Progressives liked to think of themselves as “tolerant” people, but they won’t even use that term anymore. “Tolerance” as a desired character trait is no longer sufficient. Today, the request is “acceptance”. Whatever personal lifestyle choice each makes, we are all obligated to validate it and declare it “good.”

“I may not agree with your choice, but I will still treat you with respect and dignity” doesn’t go far enough for most progressives.

For a moment, consider things from the perspective of a conservative Christian. To some that’s a lot to ask, but if progressives would like conservative Christians to be what they call, more “open-minded,” I think they’d be willing to offer the same courtesy in return.

Conservative Christians believe the Bible is Holy Scripture. It’s not just a book written by men a long time ago. God wrote the Bible himself, choosing men at different times in history, so to speak, to act as his “scribe.” The human authors wrote exactly what God wanted them to write, and the result was the perfect and holy Word of God.

Now, you may or may not agree with this belief, but the fact remains, this is what tens of millions of Christians believe, and given this, progressives must consider the magnitude of what they are asking to Christians when they demand that they declare “good” what the Bible teaches them is sin.

They expect Christians to turn their backs on God, and what God requires of them, in favor of a set of values that progressives find more acceptable.

Frankly, asking conservative Christians to give up their faith is not something most will ever accept, and I suggest to you that it’s not something progressives would accept either if the shoe was on the other foot .

Would progressives simply accept if their children were taught in school that the biblical view of good and evil is correct? I do not think so.

We must return to “tolerance”. People should be free to choose the lifestyle they want for themselves, but it is unreasonable to require everyone to validate the choice a person can make for themselves and declare it “good “.

In any event, I don’t think President Obama had anything that deep in mind when he warned Democrats to be careful not to be buzzkills. More likely, he was simply referring to the woke indignation of the day, like the Seattle-area councilman who feared that sidewalk human litter was racially insensitive, or that Easter eggs were instead called Spring. Spheres.
