U.S. Public Education: Q2 Results Snapshot

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) _ American Public Education Inc. (APEI) reported a second-quarter loss of $110 million on Tuesday, after posting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the Charles Town, West Virginia-based company said it incurred a loss of $5.82. Losses, adjusted for one-time costs, were 6 cents per share.

The results missed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate from four analysts polled by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 6 cents a share.

The for-profit education company posted revenue of $149.6 million during the period, also missing Street’s forecast. Four analysts polled by Zacks expected $152.1 million.

For the current quarter ending October, American Public Education expects its results to range from a loss of 31 cents per share to a loss of 24 cents per share.

The company said it expects revenue in the range of $145.1 million to $148.1 million for the fiscal third quarter.

US public education stocks have fallen 30% since the start of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $15.66, down 46% in the past 12 months.
